HULL DESIGN, MECHANICAL COMPONENTS

This picture shows a perfectly faired deep keel sailing boat hull (surface model) with construction geometry.

At this stage:

  1. Hydrostatic calculations can be achieved
  2. Hull speed figures can be obtained
  3. The mould can be used on a 5 Axis milling machine. *

This is a cost effective way of constructing a plug. A mould can be laid from this plug and boat production begin. 223d can coordinate a turnkey operation;

  1. You supply a concept and basic performance required.
  2. We contact the relevant boat designers (marine architects).
  3. From line plans (2D in cad or on paper produced by the marine architect or supplied by yourself) we construct a fully faired model and produce paper or other visual forms for your approval. **
  4. From this we can give you predicted performance (LCB, LCG, Speed, Large angle stability etc.) **
  5. FEA can be done on relevant sections to produce stringer information. **
  6. We have a good rapport with several companies all over the world using 5 axis machines that can generate the Plug.
  7. The Mould can be then be produced at a local Composite construction house.

The advantages of the above scenario are:

  1. That the boat would be of the highest accuracy typically the plug would be within 0.010" after initial machining.
  2. Fast turn around. It is possible to go through this whole process in a lot less than 2 months (for a boat less that 30' long. "From concept to finished hull").
  3. Cost effective. Most times you can expect a 5% to 10% reduction in cost using this method compared to traditional hand made plugs. We have seen as much as 40%.

  • At 223d we have a massive experience with CAM programs and generating files to be read by CAM software driving CNC milling machines, lathes, wire eroders, machining centres etc. We also have experience with Rapid Prototyping and LOM modelling.
